Tajikistan · 1 to 3 days from Samarkand; 8 to 12 days for the Pamirs
Tajikistan
The Seven Lakes are a day from Samarkand, Khujand two hours from Tashkent, and the Pamir Highway is a trip of its own.
Why go
Why Tajikistan
Tajikistan is the most mountainous country in the region and the least visited. From Samarkand, the border at Jartepa puts you in Penjikent in an hour, and the Seven Lakes of the Fann Mountains are a day beyond. Khujand, in the north, is a short drive from Tashkent. The Pamir Highway, in the east, needs a week and a 4x4, and we plan it as its own trip.
See and do
What to see
- The Seven Lakes
- Haft Kul, a chain of lakes in the Fann Mountains, each a different colour.
- Penjikent
- The ruins of a Sogdian city and the bazaar.
- Khujand
- The citadel and Panjshanbe bazaar, two hours from Tashkent.
- Iskanderkul
- A turquoise lake on the road from Dushanbe to the north.
- The Pamir Highway
- Dushanbe to Khorog and the Wakhan corridor, with Afghanistan across the river.
Practical
When and how
- How long
- 1 to 3 days from Samarkand; 8 to 12 days for the Pamirs
- Best time
- May to October for the Fann Mountains; July to September for the Pamirs.
- Getting there
- By road from Samarkand through the Jartepa border, or from Tashkent through Oybek to Khujand. Most passports need an e-visa, issued online; the Pamirs need a permit, which we arrange.
