Kyrgyzstan

Mountains, lakes and yurts: Issyk-Kul, the high pasture at Song-Kul, and Osh, a land border away from the Fergana Valley.

Why go

Why Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan is where you go after the cities for air. Ninety per cent of the country is mountain. In summer the herders move up to the pastures with their yurts, and you can stay with them: at Song-Kul, a lake at 3,000 metres, or in the valleys above Karakol.

It joins Uzbekistan naturally. The Fergana Valley runs straight into Osh across a walking border, and a short flight takes you to Bishkek and the lake.
